A peaceful periodic festival like election is a sign of a mature political system and Nagaland being a christain dominated state should have be leading the way in setting up the benchmark for a clean election for other states to follow suit but looking at the present political culture of our society it looks a distant dream. Infact election is a time where most of the good christian try to confirmed their ticket to hell in advance.
Our society being a Christian state is packed with events like revival, youth camp ,spiritual awakening and not to forget the wednesday, saturday, women service and lastly the Sunday church services. In all those services the topic usually revolves around peace, love, compassion, honesty, truthfulness etc and to spread the kingdom and gospel of God through our deeds but when the fever of election kicks in all hell break lose among the nagas and the concept of peace ,love ,honesty etc are all kicked out of the window and the peace loving and cheerful nagas let loose of their dark side and unleash it against our fellow nagas, all in the name of tribe, money, jobs, land, vehicle etc taking pride in proxy voting, selling ourselves to the highest bitter and ignorantly convincing ourselves that God will ignore our deeds because its election time.
In any examination good conscience students will not cheat even if they have the opportunity to do so which solves half of the problems for the invigilators and for those students who intended to cheat are prevented from adopting any unfair means , if the invigilators are vigilant and honestly fulfill its duties . Similarly the campaign for clean election will be successful only with the active support and participation of the public. Unlike other states majority of the voters are Christians and if half of the population pledge for clean election then half of our problems get solved and for the few percentage of people who will indulge in anti-social activities no matter how much preaching we may give can be taken care of by the Election commission who has various means at its disposal to check such people provided they are vigillant and act without any biasness .
Kudos to all those organisation, NGOs, pressure groups, religious organisation, local artists etc who are voluntary and tiredlessly campaigning for clean election for the better future of our naga society and to glorify God . Let the coming election be a time where we fulfill our duty as a responsible denizen of Nagaland and good childrens of God by pledging for clean election instead of confirming our ticket to hell all in the name of election.
