Violence against women, children: Districts’ advocacy continues

Dimapur, Oct. 3 (EMN): Advocacy platforms, organised by women welfare groups concerning violence against women and children, continue in the districts of Nagaland.

The government publicity agency the department of Information and Public Relations (IPR) gave updates to the media on Thursday informing about the programmes.

The district administration of Kiphire and the women help lines Mahila Shakti Kendra and Shakhi one-stop centre organised a seminar concerning violence against women and children, on October 2 at Hopongkyu Memorial Hall in Kiphire.

The programme was conducted in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the IPR stated.

Around 200 students and teachers from various schools, besides officials from the Police department and district legal officers, attended the event.

Deputy Commissioner SaritaYadav gave a speech at the programme. She urged the public to ‘avoid alcohol abuse’ and to protect children from child marriages, trafficking and child labour, the IPR reported.

‘As a good citizen, one should create a good atmosphere in the community, create awareness and educate the people,’ she said.

Wokha:  The Sakhi One-Stop Centre and MSK conducted a similar programme on October 2, the IPR stated. During the event, the extra additional commissioner of Wokha, Imtinungla Longkumer urged the women to raise their voice against any form of violence for a better future.

Advocate Shanchobeni P Lotha of the Wokha District Legal Services Association (WDLSA) spoke about the rights of women and children and the various form of violence that are punishable by law.

Mon: The district administration, Mahila Shakti Kendra and Sakhi-One Stop Centre at Mon also organised a similar programme in commemoration of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2 in Mon. Angun Lily, counsellor, spoke about the rights of women, the IPR stated.
