Dimapur, Nov. 26 (EMN): As news of diamonds being found at Wanching village in Nagaland’s Mon district spread like wildfire on November 25 with people widely sharing videos and pictures of the supposed precious stone on social media platforms, villagers reportedly started digging the ground in search of it.
Speaking to Eastern Mirror, the village council chairman of Wanching, Tonyei Angh, confirmed that a crystal-like stone (cut glass) was found by one of the villagers while farming in the field but ‘it being a diamond was highly unlikely’.
“The person who found the stone went and told his neighbour and later it went viral on WhatsApp (with users) saying it was a diamond; we hit it with a hammer but it broke into pieces which proved it was not a diamond,” said Angh.
Angh went on to inform that the Assam Rifles personnel stationed at the neighbouring Wakching village, who also came to check the supposed piece of diamond after hearing the news.
“The army also came from Wakching but they also clarified that it is just a crystal stone,” said Angh.
He further informed that the village council members had a meeting on Thursday and passed an order that circulation of such fake news on social media by any resident of Wanching will not be tolerated in future.
