Imphal, Feb. 8 (EMN):
In yet another disheartening incident, villagers of Phailianbung, a remote village in Manipur, were compelled to carry a pregnant woman on a locally made stretcher to reach hospital for a delivery case.

The incident is not a one of its kind, similar incidents have been reported in the past due to poor road condition mostly in rural areas of the state.

As per reports, Phailianbung villagers carried the woman in a locally made stretcher on Friday morning covering around 10 km from their village to Chongkhawzo village as she needed emergency medical assistance.

Later, it was informed that the 39-year-old woman was taken from Chongkhawzo village to a District Hospital in Churachandpur, about 65 km south of Imphal, where the woman delivered a baby. Even though the mother is said to be in a stable condition, the baby died a few minutes after delivery, reports said.

Phailianbung is a remote village having around 70 households located between Pherzawl and Churachandpur districts but it lies under Mualnuam sub-division in Thanlon assembly constituency in Manipur’s Churachandpur district. It is located about 120 km away from the state capital.

In August last year, another pregnant woman from Dunong village in Tamenglong district was carried on a stretcher by local youth while trailing the narrow path for almost 54 km before reaching the nearest healthcare centre at Tamei sub-divisional headquarters.
