Dimapur, Oct. 14 (EMN): Nagaland on Monday became the first state from North East zone to beat a team from outside the zone by defeating Chandigarh in a nerve-wrecking match in the ongoing men’s senior Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Competing in the plate group, Nagaland defeated Chandigarh by one wicket with eight balls to spare in Dehradun on October 14. It was a back-to-back win for the state in the tournament after having beaten Sikkim by four wickets in their previous game on October 11.
An update from joint secretary of Nagaland Cricket Association (NCA), A Rahman informed that Nagaland put Chandigarh to bat first after winning the toss and restricted the opponents to 220 runs (all out) in 49.44 overs. A K Kaushik, who scored 55 runs and Bipul Sharma with 49 runs helped Chandigarh put up a descent total.
Nagaland’s attack was led by Tahmeed and Imliwati, who took three wickets each.
Required to score 221 to win the match, Nagaland managed to chased down the target in 48.4 overs. Aosashi (AN Longchar) scored a calculated 76 runs from 117 balls and SS Mundhe scored 45 runs from 55 balls to help the state score 222 runs for loss of nine wickets.
Shreshth Nirmohi led the attack for Chandigarh with five wickets.
‘Nagaland Cricket Association congratulated the team on this historic win over Chandigarh as this is the first win from NE (North East) new states of BCCI over a team outside NE zone,” read a statement issued by joint secretary of NCA, A Rahman on Monday.
Nagaland will next play Arunachal Prasdesh at Dehradun on October 16.
