DIMAPUR — The department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences (AH&VS) has launched the 21st livestock census 2024 operation during a programme held at the conference hall of its directorate in Kohima on Wednesday.
An update from the department stated that livestock census is a quinquennial exercise in India since 1919 and the centennial census was last held in 2019.
It mentioned that livestock census is a massive door-to-door enumeration using computer assisted personal interviewing through android phone instead of paper to collect information in the field. It is conducted every five years across the country under the aegis of the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India, with active participation of the states and union territories.
It stated that livestock census is important as it throws light on the livestock and poultry resources in the country basing on details like breed, age, gender and also people engaged in rearing of animals and poultry birds and their source of income. The census data would help in devising strategies and plans for further development of the livestock and poultry sector and determine fund distribution and service requirements needed in the sector for further internal and external funding.
The director of AH&VS, Dr. Achila Ao, who officially launch the 21st livestock census enumeration in Nagaland, encouraged the field functionaries to give their best in order to generate accurate census.
