Deputy commissioners of Chümoukedima and Peren districts issue notifications for the selection of village council members.

DIMAPUR — The offices of the deputy commissioners of Chümoukedima and Peren districts have issued notifications directing all recognised villages under their respective districts to initiate the selection process for village council members (VCMs) for the 2026–2031 tenure.
According to a DIPR report, the Chümoukedima notification, issued on March 10, stated that the selection process will be conducted under the provisions of the Nagaland Village and Tribal Councils Act, 1978, read with Rule 3 of the Nagaland Village and Area Councils Rules, 1979.
Villages have been instructed to carry out the selection strictly in accordance with the Act and the prevailing customary practices and usages of the respective villages.

The proposed list of newly selected VCMs should be forwarded through the respective area administrative officers in the prescribed format and submitted to the DC office by April 15.
In a similar exercise, the deputy commissioner of Peren issued a notification on March 9 to all recognised villages under Peren district regarding the selection of new VCMs for the 2026–2031 tenure, following the end of the current village councils’ tenure. The Peren notification also stated that the village councils under the district shall stand dissolved with immediate effect, and that the head GB of each village shall assume charge of the village administration until the constitution of a new village council.
