‘Varisu’ viewers’ review: Just for Thalapathy Vijay fans; good family entertainer; mixed verdict
Our Correspondent
Bengaluru, Jan. 11 (EMN): Thalapathy Vijay has teamed up with Telugu filmmaker Vamshi Paidipally, known for his family-oriented movies, for “Varisu”, which hit the screens worldwide on Wednesday.
Produced by Dil Raju, Pearl Potluri, Param Potluri and Sireesh, “Varisu” features Vijay and Rashmika Mandanna in the lead roles, while actors like R Sarathkumar, Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Srikanth, Khushbu, and Yogi Babu play the supporting roles.
The Tamil movie has music scored by S Thaman, cinematography by Karthik Palani and editing by Praveen KL.
“Varisu” story
Businessman Rajendran (Sarath Kumar) controls the lives of his two sons — Jai (Srikanth) and Ajay (Shaam). However, his third son Vijay (Vijay) wants to be independent and does not like to be his father’s puppet.
Meanwhile, Rajendran soon realises the capabilities of his three sons and the story takes a twist when he takes an important decision to take his empire forward. One has to watch to movie to know what follows next.
First of all, “Varisu” has a wafer-thin storyline. The first half struggles to hold the viewers’ attention, but the second half is quite engaging. However, the biggest strength of the movie is Vijay. His acting and humour turn even an ordinary scene into an extraordinary one.
However, female lead actor Rashmika Mandanna has nothing much to do in the film. The visuals and music add value to the film but the lack of a strong villain turns out to be a major drawback. Overall, it is just an average film.
So, what do netizens’ say about “Varisu”? Read on to know…

‘Mark is for #ThalapathyVijay his dance & playful presence. Still a go, but start paging for Lokesh & Atlee. At S$17-$20, mark-up 100% higher than other films (incl #Hindi) satisfying only #Tamil audiences🛰️🇸🇬🌎’
Valaipechu J Bismi: ‘Unsatisfied content and screenplay; 4 songs in first half- this will be suitable only for Telugu industry not for tamil industry. ‘Much rumours about #ThalapathyVijay and his father in the recent times but the actor answers everybody on screen with a terrific scene in the first half 👏👌 after all, #Varisu is about a son mending his relationship with his dad and loving his mom to the moon. Relatablemaxx!
‘#Varisu: What a fantastic cameo by @iam_SJSuryah. Those ten minutes in the film along with #ThalapathyVijay’s histrionics were so good in the second half. A proper high moment right when the film demanded it. #TheeThalapathy 🔥
‘Full credit to @MusicThaman for elevating each scene in a new style, and the songs are all super enjoyable on screen. Be it rap or emotional BGMs, the composer has really tightened the screws here. Best one – Ranjithame!
‘This is easily the most fun that #ThalapathyVijay has had playing a role in recent times, bringing back memories of his films from the early millennium. So many enjoyable throwbacks to his popular and blockbuster films too, nothing looked forced here. That’s the win!’
Valaipechu J Bismi: ‘#Varisu below par 1st half! Movie is a typical family drama so far but moves at a very slow pace and feels like a serial. Other than a few entertaining bits and the interval sequence, nothing stands out. Verdict: Flop; Rating: 2/5.’
