KOHIMA —The inaugural edition of the two-day Unity Sports Meet, a collaborative sports event featuring eight neighbouring colonies of Kohima town – Upper Agri, Lower Agri, Mewibogie, Electrical, Merhulietsa, Agri Farm, Forest, and Jail colony, concluded at Jakhama local ground on Tuesday.

Earlier, in the inaugural programme, Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhutso, MLA of 9th Kohima Town constituency, in his address, emphasised on the theme ‘Give peace a chance.’

Rhutso stressed that sports possess the unique ability to unify people beyond the playing field and carry the spirit of unity forward with the players.

He also dwelled on the significance of ‘unity’ as a potent catalyst for peace, highlighting how sports can foster unity, making the field of play a common ground where individuals from diverse backgrounds can unite in pursuit of a shared goal.

He underscored the idea that through sports, diversity is celebrated, and bonds are formed that transcend differences, serving as a reminder that when people unite, they can achieve greatness and create a more harmonious world.

Rhutso also noted that sports impart essential life lessons, such as values of respect, cooperation, and fair play. He expressed that the greatest victories are achieved when people work together, respecting each other’s strengths and weaknesses. This sense of togetherness extends beyond the game and into the lives of the people, reminding them that unity can overcome any challenge.

Further, Rhutso announced plans for upcoming music competitions and cultural events in the 9th AC, aiming to unite and bring the community together.

The Unity Sports Meet had three primary objectives: first, to unite the eight colonies; second, to divert the attention of the youth away from prevalent issues like substance abuse through sports; and third, to provide a platform for local young athletes while promoting their talents within the community.

The inaugural edition of the Unity Sports Meet featured three sports: football for men, volleyball for women and tug of war for men.

The winning prizes included INR 20,000 for the football champions, INR 10,000 for the runner-up, INR 15,000 for the volleyball champions, INR 7,000 for the runner-up, and INR 10,000 for the tug of war winners.
