Dimapur, June 25 (EMN): Commemorating ‘International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking,’ the Dimapur Commissioner of Police (CP), Rothihu Tetseo, flagged off an all women two-wheeler and men’s foot rallies at his office premises on June 25 on the theme “Addressing drug challenges in health and humanitarian crisis.”

The women’s two-wheeler rally began at CP’s office and proceeded towards Chümoukedima, while the men’s foot rally proceeded towards the Clock Tower. Both the women and men rallies culminated at the CP’s office, Dimapur. Around 100 police personnel participated in the foot rally, while about 45 women participated in the two-wheelers rally.

Speaking during the flag-off programme, Rothihu Tetseo pointed out that people take the idea of organising such events casually without understanding the true purpose. Noting that regardless of whether such a rally prevents people from using drugs or not, he stated that the main goal was to raise awareness.

Tetseo, therefore, urged the participants to rededicate themselves so that they do not become a liability and problem to the society but spread awareness among the public. He also acknowledged the Rotary Club Dimapur for sponsoring certificates to all the women two-wheelers participants.

Meanwhile, the deputy commissioner of police (HQ), Dr. Mhalo Ezung, informed that International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed annually on June 26 since 1989 to commemorate Lin Zexu’s dismantling of the opium trade in Humen, Guangdong, which ended on June 25, 1839, as the first opium war in China.

Ezung stated that this year, the United Nations Office of Drug on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is addressing transnational drug challenges stemming from situations of crisis on the theme “Addressing drug challenges in health and humanitarian crisis”.

The officer further called for more efforts in tackling drug challenges in every possible way starting with such campaigns.
