Uniform Civil Code implementation can disintegrate India, claims Lotha Hoho
DIMAPUR— The Lotha Hoho has expressed its opposition to implementation of the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC), describing it as “code for the disintegration and subsequent downfall of India”.
In a letter to the member secretary, Law Commission of India, it said the UCC will infringe on many Fundamental Rights provided in the Constitution.
Citing India’s diversity in terms of race, language, religion, tradition and several others, the Lotha Hoho said that any attempt to introduce “uniformity” in any aspect can cause “disintegration”.
Terming the law as inhumane and a violation of human rights, it said the UCC support campaign by the majority community “will never balance ill-effects on the diversity factor”.
It went on to say that in the event of the policy makers choosing to enact the UCC, Nagaland state should be kept out of the purview of the law.
