UNC Tripartite Talks to be held on November 13
IMPHAL — The Tripartite Talks between the Centre, United Naga Council (UNC), and government of Manipur—resumed last month in New Delhi after a gap of nearly five years—is scheduled to be held again on November 13, at Senapati district headquarters, 60km north of Imphal.
According to people familiar with the matter, the Centre issued a meeting notice in this regard on Friday. As per the notice addressed to the president of UNC, the proposed meeting will be held at 10 am.
On October 11 this year, the tripartite talk was held in New Delhi with discussions focusing on the creation of seven new districts by the government of Manipur on December 8, 2016; and UNC’s demand to roll back the newly created districts.
It was attended by MHA Advisor (North East) AK Mishra, seven representatives of the UNC, and Manipur Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi and Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home) N Ashok Kumar.
The tripartite talk was started back in 2017 and despite 11 rounds of negotiations, no progress has been made so far.
The UNC, an apex body of the Nagas in Manipur, “temporarily suspended” its proposed 48-hour total bandh in Naga areas of the state effective from the midnight of October 3, 2024, after the resumption of the tripartite talk in October this year.
On September 11 this year, UNC had submitted an ultimatum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the pending issues of “arbitrary creation of seven new districts in Manipur,” and demanded to roll back Manipur government’s decision of creating seven new districts in the state.
Mention may be made that the then government in Manipur had created seven new districts in the state in December 2016 following a state cabinet meeting. The new districts are Jiribam, Kamjong, Kakching, Tengnoupal, Noney, Pherzawl and Kangpokpi.
