Dimapur, June 5 (EMN): Along with rest the rest of the world, Government schools under Urban Block Resource Centre (UBRC), Kuda, celebrated World Environment Day on the theme “Connecting people to nature” with Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), Civil Sardar, Dimapur, Zakabo V Rotokha as the chief guest and Deputy District Education Officer (DDEO), Dimapur, R Amongla Jamir, as the guest of honour respectively.
Speaking on the theme as the chief guest, SDO Rotokha advised teachers, parents and students to adopt the practice of planting trees. He said these are small things that can be done to make the earth a better place.
Highlighting that rapid growing of technology was contributing to degradation of environment, he advised the students to take help from parents or teachers to plant trees at home and in schools. He also advised to minimise using plastics bags at home or at schools.
To commemorate the day, the department also organized a painting and essay competitions on the theme. The winners of the drawing competitions were Amar Nath of GPS Lengrijan, Kuimo of GHS Sarbura, Chahying of GPS Kacharigaon, Helly Chophy of GPS Thahekhu, Sweety Kumariof GHS Thahekhu, Rohit Ali of GMS Sematilla and Aren Konyak of Indisen.
The winners of the essay competitions were Imtilemla of GHS Kuda, Khriesietou-u of GMS Nuton Bosti Sumi and Imtichuba of GHS Sarbura.
Talking to Eastern Mirror on the sideline of the programme, coordinator of the programme said that the event was organised with self funded money. She said monthly contributions were made for few months to run the programme.
The programme was chaired by Trainers of Teachers (ToT) Lucy Kath Sep, while the invocation prayer was said by Teacher In-charge, GPS Naga New Model Angami, Miranda Longkumer, and the vote of thanks was delivered by Khrieno Angami.
