A staff of the Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research, popularly known as Referral Hospital in Dimapur, and his daughter were killed in an explosion that occurred inside the hospital complex at one of its warehouse sites on Saturday afternoon around 4.45 pm.
The hospital worker, identified as 40-year-old Prakash Vishwakarma, had been employed as a cleaner at the CIHSR for the past six months. His daughter, the other victim, has also been identified as 16-year-old Ruth. According to the PRO of Dimapur police, the victim was seen handling an object, by his wife, which bears the description of a grenade “just around the time of the blast.” Citing the account of the wife, the PRO informed that the victim’s daughter, son-in-law and 4-year-old son were inside a room when the explosion took place.
Both the father and the daughter died on the spot while the son-in-law, Deepak Gurung and the 4-year-old child, Robin sustained critical injuries. They are currently being treated at CIHSR.
Police have collected the splinters from the site to “ascertain the type of the explosive.” Accordingly, investigations on how the explosive device had found its way inside the hospital complex would also be carried out, police said.
Immediately the area was sanitized by a team from Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad, Dimapur while rigorous frisking of all vehicles across Dimapur, especially in town area, were conducted.
