A grenade exploded at a firing range, killing two jawans of the Home Guards, including an officer, and injuring 20 others. The blast took place during a training of the jawans of Home Guards at Kalyani near Numaligarh in Assam’s Golaghat district on Tuesday at around 3:30 pm. Altogether 239 jawans had come to the firing range from neighbouring Jorhat district for the training.“During the training, Subedar Inspector Akon Saikia noticed a grenade. It was half-buried. When he tried to pick it up, it went off killing him and another jawan Deepak Saikia on the spot and injuring 20 others,” the police said.
The injured jawans were rushed to the Numaligarh Refinery hospital. It was not immediately known as to who had planted it at the firing range. “An enquiry has been ordered into the incident,” the police added.
Requesting anonymity, a Home Guard jawan said the accidental blast occurred due to the improper handling of the grenade. He suspected that the grenade might have been abandoned by some previous group of trainees.
