Female boxers from Senapati and Ukhrul districts to vie for gold in Manipur Olympics

Imphal, Aug. 28 (EMN): Two young female boxers from Senapati and Ukhrul districts will be vying for the gold medal in 54 kg category on Monday as they qualified for the finals in the ongoing 2nd edition of Manipur Olympic Games on the third day of the state sports extravaganza held at the Khuman Lampak sports complex.
The two boxers are Athiphro Genevieve of Punanamei village, Senapati district, and Thotyola Ronru Shimray of L Phungdhar village, Ukhrul district.
In their semi-final bouts on Sunday, 19-year-old Athiphro, daughter of Kh Kolo Mao, beat Toijam Bhumati Chanu of Bishnupur district, while Thotyola, daughter of RS Kaphungthing, defeated Thoudam Prameshwori Devi of Imphal West district.
In men’s football, the Churachandpur district football team beat Imphal West football team (3-2) in the semifinal match on Sunday via a tie breaker after the teams were locked in a goalless draw. The Churachandpur district football team will take on the Imphal East district team in the finals of the men’s football on Monday.
Interestingly, a girl swimmer Hatnunnem Haokip representing Churachandpur district bagged a silver and bronze medal each in the 50m and 100m breaststroke competitions.
Among all the hill districts of Manipur, Senapati district has the maximum medals from the competitions till Sunday.
