Two goalkeepers from Nagaland fill up the gap for the state in I-League

Kohima, Oct. 28 (EMN): As the Hero I-League season begins, two goalkeepers from Nagaland James Kithan of Churchill Brothers SC and Niethovilie Chalieu of Shillong Lajong FC got their starting berth in the first eleven to play their respective matches on Sun. Oct. 28.

James Kithan has already played the last season with the Chruchill Brother, as for Niethovilie, he was in the squad last edition but didn’t get the chance to play. This year on their first match, Niethovilie Chalieu was given the chance to debut in Shillong Lajong FC jersey as the first choice goalkeeper.

Neithovilie became the sixth person from Nagaland to play at India’s top tier league after Kwethelhi Thopi, James Kithan, Visalie Mezhü, Kivi Zhimomi and Roko Angami.

Talking to Eastern Mirror, Chalieu said “I was excited as I was waiting for the chance to play in the I-League. I am also thankful for the opportunity given to me at the right time.

I will continue to give my best in the days to come.  So please continue to support and pray for me”

On his debut, Chalieu said he wasn’t nervous but confident as he was used to playing with his teammates.

While in an interaction with James Kithan said “First of all i thank our almighty God, and also our team. Each and everyone gave their best, we miss lots of chances but is a part of the game.. I hope we will do better in the next game and collect three points.”

The 19 year old James in his opinion on the two goalkeepers from Nagaland playing on the same day, he said “It is obviously a great day for our people that two goalkeepers from Nagaland are playing on the same day. I m very happy about it and also feel proud that Naga players are coming up”

He also appreciated Neitho (Niethovilie) for his hard work and dedication that he has put in to be where he is now.  “I wish him the best for the season” said Kithan.

In the their respective matches, James team managed to keep a clean sheet as they held on a draw against defending champions Minerva Punjab 0-0.

While in the north east derby, Shillong Lajong defeated Aizawl FC 2-1 in their first I-League encounter at the JN Stadium in Shillong on Sunday. Naorem Mahesh’s brace in either half secured a victory for Lajong side.
