Imphal, Aug. 5 (EMN): Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh inaugurated two Fast Track Courts (FTCs) located at Uripok and Lamphelpat in Imphal through video conferencing from the chief minister’s secretariat on Wednesday.
Speaking on the occasion, Singh said that such FTCs have been set up to tackle cases related to crime against women in the state. During the last three and half years, around 951 cases of crime against women have been registered, he added. He mentioned that with the establishment of these FTCs, women will get faster access to justice while also serving as a deterrent to criminals.
Maintaining that there is an urgent need to dispose of all major cases of crime against women such as rape and torture, Singh said these FTCs will dispose the pending POSCO and rape cases in the state, he added. He opined that there is a long felt need that judiciary and executive should go hand in hand for justice and development. The state government has appointed two retired district and sessions judges, Salam Imocha Singh and Chandam Brajachand Singh as judges of the two newly inaugurated FTCs, he added.
In a tweet today, Chief Minister Biren wrote, “For speedy disposal of Rape and POCSO cases, I have inaugurated today, two Fast-Track Special Courts (FTSC) via video conferencing from the cabinet of chief minister’s secretariat in Imphal. Hon’ble Dy CM Y Joykumar, Hon’ble Ministers - L Jayantakumar and Karam Shyam also attended.”
In his address, Chief Justice of Manipur High Court Ramalingam Sudhakar said that the objective of such FTCs is to provide speedy and effective trials to the cases related to women and children. He mentioned that women and children need to be protected from abuse and violence. Deputy Chief Minister Y Joykumar, Minister for Law and Legislative Affairs, Jayantakumar Singh, Minister for Consumers Affairs Food & Public Distribution Karam Shyam, Judges of Manipur High Court, Chief Secretary Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Secretary (Law) Athokpam Nungsitombi, and others were present during the function.
