Two colleges in Nagaland offer free admission for students

Kohima, June 2 (EMN): In a welcoming goodwill gesture, two colleges in Kohima district have come forward to alleviate the financial burden caused by the Covid-induced lockdown on many families, especially those from poorer sections of the society, by offering free admission to students.
Oriental College, Kohima has announced free admission for students of Class 11 (Arts and Commerce), BA and BCom. It has also offered free admission for both boys and girls in its hostels.
Speaking to Eastern Mirror, the principal of Oriental College, Dr. Ketshukietuo Dzuvichu, informed that the institute had a discussion with the “sponsoring body”, who had “graciously decided” to offer free admission for students who wish to study in the college.
He informed that they decided to assist students seeking admission in the college for this year’s academic session as a “goodwill gesture” after considering the financial difficulties many parents had to go through due to the Covid-19 situation and also as part of silver jubilee of the institute next year
The principal went on to inform 20 girls and 40 boys can also avail free admission in the college hostel on “first come first serve” basis.
It was also told that the college offers “college scholarship and special category students scholarship”.
Five students each from BA and BCom 1st semester who secure 1st division in HSSLC examination can avail the college scholarship after selection based on merit. Selected students will get 50% tuition fee waiver from 1st to the 5th semester if they continue to secure 60% mark in the end semester exams, and 100% tuition fee waiver in the 6th semester if they score above 60% in all the semester exams.
Special scholarships are also given annually to degree students- one each from BA and BCom. The main objective of this scholarship is to provide an opportunity to students from poor economic background who have good academic performance.
It may be mentioned that the college also waived two months’ fees of all students from poor families (daily wage earners) who approached the college authority during the academic session 2020.

Another institute- College of Arts and Technology at Nerhe Phezha in Kohima, is also offering free admission to students seeking admission for BA 1st, 3rd and 5th semesters.
Principal of the college, Dr. Joseph Lkr informed that 40 boys and 40 girls can avail free admission in the college hostel.
He stated that the college decided to offer free admission to students after many parents from economically poorer sections of the society appealed to the government to mitigate their plight by giving fee concessions to their children during the pandemic.
