Dimapur, Jan. 13 (EMN): 2020 by any comparison was a year to forget for most people. However, video games had a particularly good year on Twitter with more than 2 billion tweets about the topic being shared on the social media platform in 2020.
According to Twitter’s metrics, 2020 saw a whopping 75 per cent increase over 2019 for gaming-related tweets. On a blog post, Twitter wrote, “2020 was the year we were all at home. And the year where we all played video games more than ever before. For the first time ever, there were more than 2 BILLION Tweets about gaming throughout the year. This is up 75% from 2019, with a 49% increase in unique authors.”
According to Twitter, gaming was the 6th most followed topic in 2020 on the platform. One big reason why 2020 saw this huge jump can be attributed to the fact the global pandemic kept many of us at home and most of us are guilty of spending a lot more time glued to our phones and PCs than usual. The entire summer of 2020 saw big online gaming events like E3, Gamescom and GDC go exclusively online and this meant that gamers had to interact with social media platforms more frequently than they did the past year.
