DIMAPUR — The former president of Changsao Thangjam Setshang (CTS), Naongchemten, on March 16 underscored the urgent need for elevating the status of women in society aligning with global efforts towards gender equality and empowerment.

She also emphasised the importance of forming an organised women’s groups in driving positive social change and advocated for the education of girl children as a crucial step in combating early/ child marriage and promoting holistic development.

Naongchemten, who was the guest speaker, stated this during the general meeting of Tuensang Village Women Organisation (TVWO) held at Sejong ground in Tuensang village. She also highlighted the myriad ways in which women can contribute to family and community health, well-being and economic prosperity. Besides, she emphasised the significance of women’s involvement in economic activities such as selling locally produced foodstuffs and handicrafts, which not only enhance household income but also foster community cohesion and resilience. She further emphasised the role of women as advisors in community councils, advocating for their active participation in decision-making processes for the holistic development of the community.

The programme began with an invocation prayer said by NK Lepla followed with a welcome address delivered by T Asang, advisor of DYSTTS and song was presented by the members of Tuensang Village Students’ Union (TVSU).

N Kaimang, president of Tuensang Village Citizens’ Union (TVCU), and Asen, president of Changsao Thangjam Setshang (CTS), also spoke on the occasion, emphasising the pivotal role of women in fostering peace, harmony and socio-economic progress within the community.

Report stated that the general meeting concluded with a renewed sense of purpose and determination among the members to work collaboratively towards realising the vision of a more inclusive, empowered and prosperous Tuensang village.
