After more than a month of violence and communal tensions in Tuensang district between two communities, the state administration on Friday finally issued a set of directives to control the situation. However, the directives elaborated mostly about compensation to victims who fell to the communal violence.
The Additional Chief Secretary and Home Commissioner of Nagaland issued a directive on January 6 noting the “prevailing law and order situation” in Tuensang district.
“In view of the deteriorating law and order situation” in Tuensang district, the directive said, the state government has taken a number of decisions to “help restore normalcy.” Ex-gratia compensation of Rs. one lakh has been announced for the person killed on February 6, the government stated. The district administration will take action” for deposit of all arms and ammunition in the affected area. Bond/undertaking will be obtained from the villages in the affected area for maintaining peace under appropriate provision of law,” the directive stated.
The state government has also prohibited any activity by members of the public in the disputed area near Chendang saddle village in Tuensang.
“The district administration shall submit a survey report of the disputed area to the government. District administration shall send comprehensive proposal for provision of relief or the property destroyed/damaged in Tuensang Town and Chedang Saddle,” the government stated.
According to the state’s directives, the commissioner of Nagaland has been asked to “take necessary action accordingly.”
The Director General of Police has been “requested” to constitute a new special investigation team to probe into the incidents leading to the loss of life and property.
Also, two companies of the Nagaland Armed Police have been “rushed to Tuensang” to augment forces available there, the directive added.
