India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, described a university as a refuge for humanism, tolerance, reason, the adventure of ideas, and the search for truth, highlighting its crucial roles in human development, intellectual growth, and societal progress. While a university is primarily recognised as a centre of higher learning, its true essence lies in fostering new ideas and innovation through research. Sans research, a university risks becoming merely an institution for teaching and for the issuance of degree certificates, rather than a hub for intellectual discourse and critical thinking, where new ideas, inventions, and technologies are produced. In this regard, Nagaland University is making notable progress, which is commendable, especially considering that the region stands nowhere in scientific inventions and discoveries. Researchers from Nagaland University are on course to change this narrative through their dedication to innovation, leading to discoveries and breakthroughs that can contribute to groundbreaking inventions. This work includes the development of a chitosan-based hydrogel membrane electrolyte that improves the safety, durability, performance, and sustainability of next-generation energy storage devices; the creation of a biodegradable biopolymer to combat microplastic pollution, reduce carbon emissions, and support greener industrial materials; the transformation of invasive weeds into a tool for drugs, antibacterial, and cancer research; the discovery of cancer-fighting potential in traditional Konyak herbal medicine; and several other findings that have been published in newspapers and peer-reviewed scientific journals. Then there are studies that help the public understand local realities by providing scientific insights into the fragile geo-ecological conditions of the region, changing weather patterns, and environmental degradation. Over the years, the researchers have also identified numerous rare plant and animal species, highlighting the state's rich biodiversity and the urgent need for conservation.
Recent research and findings from Nagaland University underscore its growing contributions across diverse fields, including science, technology, the environment, ecology, and human studies. This trend has enhanced the university's reputation, positioning it as a hub for research and innovation, which is commendable. Such recognition may encourage students from various parts of the country to pursue higher studies in the state. However, sustained investment and support from the government and the public are essential to maintain a vibrant research culture and to transform the university into a centre of excellence. Universities should nurture critical thinkers and produce responsible citizens who can make meaningful contributions to nation-building, rather than merely producing employable graduates.
