DIMAPUR — Five persons were injured on Sunday when a truck allegedly driven under the influence of alcohol veered off the road and crashed into a private residential compound at Chümoukedima Ward No. 1 along National Highway-29.
The accident occurred between 2.30 pm and 3 pm, according to Chümoukedima Traffic Police.
The unloaded truck, reportedly travelling towards Dimapur from Jharnapani for repair work, suddenly lost control, crossed into the opposite lane and crash-landed into a culvert before ramming into the compound. The house, however, escaped damage.
Eyewitnesses said all occupants of the vehicle, including the driver, appeared to be in an inebriated condition.
One passenger is said to have suffered a broken leg, while the other four sustained minor injuries.
All five injured were taken to a nearby hospital. Four of them, including the driver, have been discharged, while one remains under observation and is expected to be released soon.
Soon after his discharge, the driver was taken into custody by Chümoukedima Police.
The vehicle has been recovered and is currently held at the traffic control office as investigation continues.
