[dropcap]H[/dropcap]undreds of Congress workers on Wednesday staged demonstrations in front of all eight district magistrates and 23 sub-divisional magistrates across Tripura, demanding repolling in both the Lok sabha seats and legal action against chief electoral officer (CEO) Ashutosh Jindal.
Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee president D C Hrangkhwal said the party had sent video footage and still photographs of many polling booths of Tripura where CPM cadres, with the support of polling staff, rigged votes.
But the EC is yet to take any step against the accused officials.“We have taken up the matter in Delhi at the political level. In Assam, polling officials who indulged in rigging in only one booth are now in jail and an administrative inquiry has begun,” alleged Hrangkhwal.
He added that Congress would continue its agitation to press for repolling in the state.
On the other hand, Congress, BJP, Trinamool Congress and Tripura Progressive Gramin Congress (TPGC) have raised objection to the statement of Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Officers’ Association, Tripura Chapter, which sought action against the parties for agitating against the CEO.
The Congress president said by supporting the inaction of the CEO over rigging, the IAS Officers’ Association supported the crime and also threatened political parties to restrain themselves from staging agitations against the CEO.
Earlier, the association moved the EC, seeking action against political parties which had burnt the effigy of Jindal and accused him of manipulating elections.
