Training on sustainability of groundwater sources underway

KOHIMA — A three day long Training on sustainability of groundwater sources got underway today (June 20) at the office of the chief engineer of Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) in Kohima.

The programme is being sponsored by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, department of Water Resources, RD and GR and Central Ground Water Board, North Eastern Region, Guwahati.

An update from the PHED department mentioned that Jal Jeevan Mission (Har Ghar Jal), implemented by department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, government of India, aims to provide safe drinking water to each and every household in India. However, as sustainability of groundwater source especially in hard rock terrains face challenges, it stated that the groundwater reservoir aquifer systems need to be rejuvenated by making the sources sustainable.

It added that following the SoPs of the Ministry of Jal Shakti, CGWB, NER Guwahati, is imparting training to the engineers of PHED, Nagaland on the source sustainability.

The inaugural session was attended by Vikeduolie Mepfhuo, superintendent engineer of PHED, Kohima circle, as chief guest, and Ichirang Zeliang, executive engineer of Sanitation and WSSO, PHED, as the guest of honour.

In the first session, Arijit Mitra, scientist C at CGWB, highlighted the concepts of hydrogeology and aquifer system, which was followed by presentation on hydrogeology of Nagaland with special reference to springs by Shasinlo Kent, scientist C at CGWB.

Report stated that Aneinuo Pienyü, scientist C at CGWB, spoke on SoP of source sustainability of groundwater sources and risk assessment, while Chao Kongseng Gogoim, scientist C, led in the hands-on session on toposheet reading and demarcation of watershed boundary.

The training would culminate on June 22.

The inaugural programme was chaird by Anenuo Pienyu, scientist C at CGWB, and concluded with vote of thanks delivered by Shasinlo Kent, scientist C at CGWB.
