Training on piggery held in Manipur

Imphal, April 7 (EMN): In a move to meet pork demands of the Northeast states — Manipur in particular, a three-day training programme on ‘self-employment and scientific piggery’ was started at the premises of Keithellakpam Piggery Farm at Luker Mamang Leikai in Imphal West district on Thursday.
The training programme was organised under the aegis of Keithellakpam Piggery Farm with the initiative of Pipi Keithellakpam, who owns the piggery farm, 10 km west of Imphal.
Head of department of Animal Sciences, Central Agricultural University (CAU) Eroisemba Dr. Th Ranadhir Singh and politician Thounaojam Brinda were present during the inaugural function of the day’s training programme.
Later, delivering a motivational talk on housing, sanitation and feeding management for profitable pig production, Dr. Ranadhir Singh said that piggery in Manipur has a good opportunity considering its potential in the state, as 99% t of the population here are meat eaters.
“So we’ve enough potential in piggery if one seriously takes up the matter,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of taking up piggery and its value added products as an income earning profession, he also informed that 50% of the country’s pig population is available in the northeast.
At the same time, people involved in piggery also need to face the challenges of their diseases, he added. Earlier, Thounaojam Brinda, who recently contested in the state assembly election from Yaiskul assembly constituency also spoke during the occasion.
Regarding the hosting of the training programme, 30-year-old Pipi Keithellakpam said the need of the hour is to share his experiences in taking up piggery as a profession and learn more from others for a sustainable development in the state.
Nearly 50 youths including some females from Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, Senapati, Ukhrul districts are taking part in the three-day training programme.
