Training on groundwater management held in Mokokchung

Officials along with students of MCTE after the training programme on local groundwater related issues and participatory groundwater management in Mokokchung on Friday.

MOKOKCHUNG — The Central Ground Water Board, NER Guwahati, under the Ministry of Water Resources, conducted a training on local groundwater-related issues and participatory groundwater management at Mokokchung College of Teacher Education (MCTE), Yimyu, on Friday.

The programme was attended by Dr. T Alemla Longkumer, principal of MCTE, as the chief guest and Sutemo Kikon, executive engineer of water resources department, Mokokchung, as the guest of honour.

Speaking at the training, Dr. Alemla shed light on one of the college’s primary goals to conserve the environment and to augment water sources in the college premises.

She urged upon each individual to take responsibility for preserving and conserving the natural water resources for the future saying that water is the elixir of life without which there could be no social and economic prosperity.

Sutemo Kikon has highlighted water stress faced by India and Nagaland and Mokokchung in particular. He has underlined the need for the convergence of different departments for sustainable water conservation.

Dakshina Rabha, officer-in-charge of Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) and state unit office, Shillong, Meghalaya, deliberated on the roles and responsibilities of CGWB in imparting training, reporting and documentation of groundwater in the Northeastern region for its augmentation, conservation and preservation of groundwater for ensuring availability of safe and sustainable water to all.

During the technical session, resource persons Tiamenba spoke on ‘Hydrological concept and aquifer information system,’ while Bipul Vishal spoke on ‘Rainwater harvesting and artificial recharge,’ V Kezo on ‘Water quality issues and its impact on human health,’ and Anenuo Pienyu spoke on ‘Hydrogeology of Nagaland with special reference to spring water.

The session concluded with a brief summary of the topic delivered by resource person, Dakshina Rabha.

Guest house dedicated

A guest house in memory of Yashikala, wife of NI Jamir, was inaugurated at Peniel Prayer Home in Longsa village under Mokokchung district on Friday.

The guest house was sponsored by the daughters and spouses of the Late NI Jamir. Besides, the pastor of Longsa Baptist Church also dedicated two houses which were sponsored by the late NI Jamir family for Peniel Prayer Home.

The chairman of Longsa village council, Talichuba, and the deacon of Longsa Baptist Church, Supongmeren, also spoke at the event.

The dedication programme was attended by NI Jamir’s family members including Imtirenla, Chubala, Alemtemshi Jamir and Metsübo Jamir.

It may be mentioned that NI Jamir and Yashikala were blessed with nine children (6 six female and three male). After serving as the chief secretary of Nagaland, NI Jamir joined politics and breathed his last on September 7, 1996.

NI Jamir’s wife Yashikala was a charismatic woman who worked for the welfare of our society. She was awarded “Aolima nung tetsü tajungtila” (The best mother award) by the Watsü Mungdang in 2001.
