DIMAPUR — Deputy Chief Minister TR Zeliang on Monday urged village councils to safeguard Naga customary system.
Addressing the public at Jalukie Zangdi village during the inauguration of council hall, the deputy CM stated that village councils are the custodian of customary system and its practices, an update stated.
Asserting that customary laws and practices are indispensable, Zeliang emphasised that every Naga should be well-versed in their respective laws and practices.
He stressed the need for uniform customary laws across the state to enhance their effectiveness and popularity. He also pointed out that Article 371 A of the Indian Constitution grants Nagas the freedom to practice their customary laws, but it's under threat of being forgotten.

The deputy CM urged Nagas to incorporate their customary system into daily life to preserve their unique identity. He highlighted that Naga customary practices are simple, effective, and efficient in delivering justice, unlike the Indian judiciary system, with less bureaucracy, prompt action, and minimal financial burden.
Zeliang further appealed to the people to safeguard land and resources for future generations, calling for an end to the practice of selling land without public consultation by council chairmen or GBs.
The inauguration programme was attended leaders of various village, district administrations, officers and public.
