Kohima, Feb. 8 (EMN): Former Nagaland Chief Minister and Naga People’s Front (NPF) Legislature Party leader TR Zeliang has been appointed as the chairman of United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

The decision was taken at the joint parliamentary meeting of the UDA comprising all the ruling parties — NDPP, BJP, NPF, and Independent — held at the Chief Minister’s Residential Complex State Banquet Hall in Kohima on Monday.

The appointment of the UDA Chairman has been pending since the all-party alliance was formed last year with an objective to facilitate an early settlement to the protracted Naga political issue.

Sources had earlier told this newspaper that agenda like the upcoming Manipur Assembly elections, where NPF had fielded 10 candidates and BJP in all the 60 seats, would be discussed at the meeting.

The UDA also decided to give one ministerial berth to the NPF MLA and the swearing-in ceremony will be held at 9 am on Tuesday at the Raj Bhavan.

The house further decided at the meeting that Nagaland Chief Minister would campaign for the NPF candidates contesting in the upcoming Manipur Assembly elections scheduled to be held on February 27 and March 3.

It added that the house would discuss NPF’s recent invitation to ‘Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and his MLAs’ to come together for the larger interest of the people.
