Dimapur, June 22 (EMN): Under the banner “Go Green,” the department of Tourism in collaboration with the department of Land Resource and Nagaland Bee and Honey Mission undertook a tree plantation drive at the Naga Heritage village in Kisama on June 22.
The plantation drive was led by the secretary for Tourism T Mhabemo Yanthan which was stated to be one of his first plans after taking charge over the department.
According to a press release received from the department of Tourism, Yanthan spoke on conserving the natural resources without which it would lead to decline in biodiversity.
Citing the present scenario in Nagaland Yanthan said the environmental impact caused by the rampant slash and burn of forest cover for agriculture and loggings was alarming.
Speaking on the role and importance of bees and beekeeping for environment, the secretary said that bees are essential components for almost all the world’s terrestrial ecosy stems for reproduction and survival of flora and fauna.
More than one-third of the world crop production was dependent on bees–pollinating service. So, out of 90% food crops that feed the world population, 70% of the crop is being pollinated by bees, he informed.
Yanthan urged the people to play a part by planting bee friendly flowers in public gardens, community space, meadows, and roadsides.
