Tourism can generate income, improve economy — Khehovi

Dimapur, April 6 (EMN): Stating that there is a big prospective for tourism in the state, H Khehovi Sumi, advisor for Tourism, Art and Culture said that it would generate income and improve the economy of the state.

He was speaking on the second day of the Phom Monyu festival as the special guest at local ground, Longleng on Wednesday, DPRO Longleng informed.

Asserting that “our culture defines our identity”, Khehovi called upon the Phom community to promote and preserve the rich culture and traditions of “our ancestors to protect our identity”. He exhorted the people not to observe the festival for celebration and merry making alone but also to promote their identity and to educate the younger generation.

Maintaining that every Naga tribe has their own diverse festival, dialect and attire but bound by Christianity, he added that the rich culture and unique tradition is the beauty of the Nagas.

In his welcome address, chief Host, Manpai Phom, ADC Tseminyu and president, Phom Gazetted Officers Association, welcomed and acknowledged the special guest for his support and guidance.

He further thanked the government of Nagaland under the dynamic leadership of Neiphiu Rio for taking up the idea of encouraging and giving due importance to ‘our age-old custom, tradition, culture’ and opening up opportunities and avenues for the people of Nagaland.

The festival host BS Nganlang Phom, MLA and chairman of DPDB, Longleng said the festival blessing.

Solidarity speeches were said by Tsapikyu Sangtam, president ENPO and Nungsanglemba, president CKS respectively.

The highlights of the day’s activities included beating of the log drum by Tangha village, cultural Dance by Hukphang Nyula, Pongo Union, Jakphang village, Yachem Unionla, Longleng Sadar and Yongnyah block.

Traditional competitions included stilt bamboo walking, grain grinding, pottery making, blacksmith, handicraft and mat making.

Earlier, invocation was said by Rev. Beau Phom, pastor Longleng Town Baptist Church and welcome address by chief Host followed by Monyu greetings from deputy commissioner of Longleng, M Shayung Phom.
