Toshiba honours pioneer engineer from Nagaland

DIMAPUR — Toshiba, a Japanese multinational electronics company headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, Japan, has honoured Lanu Toy, a pioneer in Northeasrn India’s electrical power sector, during his visit to Japan on October 11, 2023.

Born in 1927, Lanu Toy’s illustrious career as an electrical engineer was widely celebrated in Nagaland. His tenure culminated in his retirement from government service as the chief electrical engineer, a position of great influence and responsibility. He has played a pivotal in the Umiam Stage-I hydroelectric power project at Barapani, Meghalaya. His endeavours played a pivotal role in bringing prosperity to northeastern India.

In 1961, Toy first journeyed to Japan, embarking on a transformative six-month training programme at Toshiba. The programme focused on the intricacies of the Toshiba 9MW turbine power generation unit, a cornerstone of the Umiam Stage-I hydroelectric power project.

On October 11, 2023, Toy visited Japan. It was during his visit that he had the privilege of meeting Yotsuyanagi, the distinguished leader of Toshiba ESS (Energy System and Solutions). Reflecting on his time at Toshiba, Toy emphasised how the knowledge and expertise he gained, coupled with an invaluable understanding of Japanese work ethic and culture, formed the bedrock of his technological achievements.

During their meeting, Yotsuyanagi paid tribute to Toy’s substantial contributions thus far and conveyed Toshiba’s eagerness to continue benefitting India through its technological prowess. He affirmed Toshiba’s significant role in supplying 24 sets of hydropower turbines and 34 generators in India since 1965, a testament to Toshiba’s impact on India’s hydropower generation sector.
