THREE police personnel from the Nagaland Armed Police (NAP) are to be honored with two of the country’s highest police awards. The awards are the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service. The awards would be conferred on the personnel on Independence Day on August 15 in New Delhi, along with 861 other police personnel from across the country.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Kewetso Mero is to be awarded the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service. Two other ranks from the NAP will receive the Police Medal for Meritorious Service. The two are Assistant Sub-Inspector Modothi Ruse of the District Executive Force of Kohima and Battalion Havildar Major Mhasizo Chakhesang of the 4th NAP battalion.
The NAP is one of the biggest police forces in the country. Unfortunately, the NAP is also widely perceived to be the most underutilized police force in conflict-ridden North region of India.
The Nagaland police may not have attracted new fans even as it struggles to thaw the increasing level of insurgent-related activities and crimes in Nagaland. Nonetheless, the national police awards may lift the morale of the Naga police ranks and perhaps encourage citizens’ faith in them to protect their lives and property.
On Independence Day, the country will be honoring 864 police personnel with the police medals during the national celebrations in Delhi. The President’s Police Medals for Gallantry have been awarded to 6 personnel, Police Medals for Gallantry to 132 personnel, President’s Police Medals for Distinguished Service to 87 personnel and Police Medals for Meritorious Service to 639 personnel.
38 police personnel have also been awarded including the President’s Correctional Service Medals for Distinguished Service to 2 personnel and Correctional Service Medals for Meritorious Service to 36 personnel.
