Top 10 highest-grossing Tamil movies of 2022: Ponniyin Selvan, Vikram, Beast, and more

The year 2022 was a record-breaking one for Tamil cinema, as many movies achieved unprecedented success while big-budget Bollywood films underperformed at the box office. In fact, it was the best year for Kollywood since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Below is a list of the top 10 highest-grossing movies in Tamil Nadu in 2022.

1. Ponniyin Selvan: 1 (PS: 1)

Mani Ratnam made a fantastic comeback with the first part of ‘Ponniyin Selvan: 1 (PS: 1)’. The movie was reportedly made with an estimated budget of INR 500 crore and featured some of the biggest names from the Indian film industry like Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Trisha Krishnan, Sarath Kumar, Jayam Ravi, Prakash Raj, and Sarath Kumar among others. The movie minted INR 105 crore from the Tamil Nadu box office.

2. Vikram

Kamal Haasan‘s ‘Vikram’ is in second place in the list of highest-grossing Kollywood movies in Tamil Nadu in 2022. Like Mani, Kamal made his comeback after delivering a series of hit films at the box office. The film had Vijay Sethupati and Fahadh Faasil in key roles. The mystery action thriller made INR 80 crore in Tamil Nadu.

3. Beast

Vijay Thalapathy‘s movies usually take the top place when it comes to the highest-grossing list. However, his ‘Beast’ movie underperformed at the collection centres after clashing with Yash’s ‘KGF: Chapter 2’. It raked in around INR 60 crore at the Tamil Nadu box office and takes the third spot in the list. 

4. Valimai

Ajith Kumar‘s ‘Valimai’ was a non-holiday release but it still managed to collect INR 52 crore at the Tamil Nadu box office. However, it did not perform as well as his previous films. Nonetheless, the film takes the fourth spot on our list.

5. KGF 2

Despite clashing with ‘Beast’, Yash’s flick performed relatively well in Tamil Nadu. The first part of the movie collected less than INR 10 crore. However, the second instalment earned INR 42 crore. It has to be noted that Tamil Nadu is the only region where it did not strike gold. It fared considerably better in Andhra/Telangana and North India as well as overseas.

6. Don

In sixth place is Sivakarthikeyan‘s coming-of-age comedy-drama film, ‘Don,’ which emerged as a surprise winner for 2022. It managed to rake in INR 36 crore at the Tamil Nadu box office.

7. Thiruchitrambalam

Dhanush‘s ‘Thiruchitrambalam’ was a romantic comedy-drama film directed by Mithran R Jawahar. The film had Raashi Khanna, Priya Bhavani Shankar and Nithya Menen on its roster. The movie raked in INR 35 crore and takes the number seven spot on the list. 

8. RRR

Like ‘KGF 2’, ‘RRR’ did extraordinarily well in the country except for Tamil Nadu. The historical fiction directed by SS Rajamouli had Junior NTR and Ram Charan as lead characters. It raked in only INR 34 crore in Tamil Nadu but the film performed well in other regions including overseas. RRR takes the eighth spot on our list.

9. Love Today

Coming in at ninth place is Pradeep Ranganathan‘s ‘Love Today’ which did exceptionally well at the Tamil Nadu box office. It was a romantic drama film that earned INR 27 crore in its lifetime. It has to be noted that the movie performed exceptionally well despite not featuring any big names in the cast.

10. Sardar

Lastly, PS Mithran‘s action thriller ‘Sardar’ takes the tenth spot on our list. The movie had Karthi and Raashi Khanna in the lead role. All in all, Sardar earned INR 26 crore in its lifetime at the Tamil Nadu box office.
