Too Many Police Checkpoints Dampening Festive Spirit
Sir, it is observed that the Nagaland Police have erected many checkpoints during the Christmas season in the state, specially in Dimapur and Chumoukedima areas. While the role of police as law enforcement agency cannot be relegated to the background, it is seen that at many checkpoints, it’s personnels are in inebrieted state and unruly, and hence, one cannot expect civilised behaviour from such personnels. The random halting of trucks to extract some few hundred / thousand bucks from the trucks aggravate the traffic jam during the peak periods. It will be greatly appreciated if the superior officers sensitise their junior officers/ forces from time to time that their paramount role is to serve the public for which they are paid by the Government. While the central and state Governments has abolished all check gates except toll gates in the national and state highways in the interest of public service, mushrooming checkpoints in towns and cities is rather becoming a public menace.
