Appeals to reinstate doctor at PHC Tokiye

Dimapur, May 16 (EMN): Tokiye Range Kukami Union (TRKU), a GBs’ union under Aghunato sub-division in Zunheboto district, has appealed to the state government to deploy a doctor and also provide better healthcare facilities at Tokiye public health centre (PHC).

In a representation to the principal director of Health and Family Welfare, the union expressed dismay over the transfer of the lone doctor at PHC Tokiye without deploying her replacement. With the rapid spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, the union felt that even the remote areas of the state should be logically and pragmatically prepared with the machinery to combat the pandemic.

The union’s representation jointly appended by its chairman, Kasuho P Yepthomi, and the secretary, Kakheto Yepthomi, have apprised that PHC Tokiye provides healthcare services mainly to the inhabitants of Tokiye town as well as to the surrounding seven villages namely Viyilho, Viyixe, Khetoi, Aghiyili, Yezashi, Thokihi and Khukishe which has a total population of about  10,000.

Terming the present season not favourable as people are susceptible to innumerable sicknesses, the union stated that the risk becomes more intense when a patient contracts  Covid-19.

Also highlighting the poor economic condition of the people in the area, it cited instances where many people have died due to their inability to bear the cost of treatment outside their home. Besides, it claimed that many have died on the way while travelling to seek treatment.

“As much as those citizens living in cities and towns need health care facilities, we also need them. We are not demanding for all the specialized professional doctors in the PHC, but one that can attend to the urgent needs of our people,” the representation read.

The union also added that PHC Tokiye is currently manned by one nurse with no other facilities to combat the pertinent challenge posed by Covid-19 in particular and other diseases in general.

The union, therefore, sought an immediate intervention of the principal director to redress the problem, while it also cautioned that it would be compelled to pursue their rights if the request is not fulfilled.
