Dimapur, May 28 (EMN): Residents of Tobu town on Tuesday conducted a ‘peace rally’ to protest the killing of two Assam Rifles troops by unknown assailants between Changlangshu and Ukha junction in Tobu area on May 26.

A press release from Tobu Area Students Union (Tasu) informed that the rally started from the town’s bazaar junction following short speeches from the representatives of KU Tobu, KNSK Tobu and Tasu.

“The representatives from three organisations highlighted the need for peace, especially in a place like Tobu where such incidents have been occurring despite of repeated appeals by the community to maintain peace. Mr. Teyeng Ngontang, vice president of KU Tobu, while condemning the act of violence to disturb the peaceful atmosphere of Tobu, shared that the objective of the rally was to send a strong message towards any groups who are responsible for it that the people of Tobu are against such act of violence in their area.

“Mr. Sangti Konyak, president of Tasu expressed condolence on behalf of Tobu area to the bereaved families of two innocent ‘jawans’ who were killed in the unfortunate incident and shared that no development can happen without peace and such incident always damage the peaceful coexistence in the community,” it stated.

Around 1000 protestors, consisting mostly of women, marched to the office of additional deputy commissioner of Tobu to submit a memorandum addressed to the deputy commissioner of Mon ‘demanding urgent intervention of the administration to maintain peace’ and to upgrade the police station at Tobu.
