IMPHAL — Security has been beefed up in and around the state capital Imphal on the eve of the 77th Republic Day celebrations on Sunday.
Deployment of armed and unarmed security personnel were seen at strategic locations.
It may be mentioned that many insurgent groups have been boycotting Republic Day celebrations in the state by calling total shutdowns.
Meanwhile, security forces recovered large numbers of arms and ammunition from four districts - Churachandpur, Imphal West, Imphal East and Pherzawl.

Three RPG ammunitions, five 30 mm grenade, one bolt action rifle (303 calibre), two medium range Pumpi (local canon), three Pumpi shells, two single barrel rifles and 10 SBBL cartridges were recovered from an area between Loilamkot and Nalon in Churachandpur district on Saturday, according to Manipur police.
Similarly, another team of security forces recovered two modified .303 rifles, three pistols with a magazine each, six magazines of different arms, three 36 HE grenades, 23 live rounds of ammunition of different calibers, one detonator, four mortar bomb shells, one IED and explosives weighing 1 kg from from Waheng Khuman Mamang Leikai area under Wangoi Police Station in Imphal West district on Saturday.
On the same day, security forces also recovered one DBBL gun, one country-made 9mm pistol with empty magazine, two HE hand-grenades, one practice rifle grenade, two INSAS rifle magazines, 20 live rounds of ammunition of different calibres, one bullet proof helmet, two BP covers, and 2 BP iron plates from the foothill of Naotrok Hill Range under Sagolmang Police Station in Imphal East district, police added.
