Dimapur, Jan. 20: The people of Thurutsuswumi village, in Phek district, celebrated their 26th Cultural Day in the village on Friday. The chief guest of the event was Dr. Vekho Swuro, president of ‘North East NGO Federation,’ a press release from the organizers informed on January 20.

The event was organized under the aegis of the Thurutsuswumi Cultural Association (TCA), it was informed.

Dr. Vekho Swuro stated in his address that the identity of a person is often revealed by his culture and tradition. Their real identity is born out of culture, he told the gathering, according to the press release.

The speaker urged the people to “keep on preserving and promoting the culture and traditions and also opt it as an important practice in human lives.” Showcasing age-old tradition is part of preserving social values, he said. Thus, the press release quoted him as having said, ‘Observing cultural days should continue even in the near future so that the right message is passed to our upcoming youngsters.’

Swuro also called Thurutsuswumi an “important village having a historical nature,” according to the organizers. The village stands at an important location surrounded by rivers–one flowing to the Chindwin River and other to the Brahmaputra. It is a village with rich culture and tradition and is “one of the honest villages” from among the Chakhesang community, the press release asserted.

“This village is still upholding the spirit of nationalism stated Swuro. It is to be noted that, it had protected the Naga tall leader AZ Phizo by sheltering him under a tree for a long period of time and thereby treat him well with all possible efforts and henceforth, their yeomen services during those critical times being rendered can never go in vain in to the minds of the Nagas,” the press release stated.

Urging the village to “respect the Chakhesang Public Organization (CPO) resolution in later and spirit,” the speaker added that the apex tribal organization was “pursuing with the mandate of the entire Chakhesangs.”

Further, urging upon the Chakhesang community to respect each other and live a peaceful life, Swuro stated that for peace and unity, the “sole slogan of the Nagas,” the Chakhesang community “should uphold the aspiration of the Nagas as a loving citizens.”

The two-day long celebrations feature indigenous cultural activities and competitive events, the organisers said.
