Bengaluru, Jan. 14 (EMN): Ajith Kumar’s “Thunivu” performed better than Vijay’s “Varisu” at the Tamil Nadu box office on day two.
“Thunivu”, which was released in over 430 screens, is said to have collected about Rs 12-13 crore on the second day after earning about Rs 23 crore on the opening day, taking the total collection of two days to Rs 35-37 crore.
“Thunivu” is an action heist directed by H Vinoth and produced by Boney Kapoor. Manju Warrier plays the female lead with Samuthirakani, Mahanadi Shankar, Veera and others playing the supporting roles.
Meanwhile, Thalapathy Vijay’s “Varisu” is also said to have witnessed a huge drop in collection at the Tamil Nadu box office on day-two, as was expected over people likely to travel during the Pongal festival and Thursday being a working day.
The film, which was released in over 425 screens in Tamil Nadu, reportedly earned around Rs 10-12 crore from the second day of screening after racking in about Rs 20 crore on day-1, taking the total collection to Rs 32 crore.
“Varisu” collection also witnessed a massive drop in Karnataka and Kerala, centres considered as Vijay’s forte.
“Trouble with a middle of a working week (Wednesday) release outside of #TN is that #Tamil popular star driven films take a nosedive! #Varisu & #Thunivu have taken a big drop on day 2 in Karnataka & Kerala!, [sic]” leading trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai tweeted.
“Varisu” is a family entertainer, directed by Vamshi Paidipally of “Thozha” fame and has Rashmika Mandanna in the female lead with Prakash Raj, Sarath Kumar, Yogi Babu, Srikanth, Shaam and a host of other actors in the supporting cast.
