‘Thunivu’ closing collection in US: Ajith’s latest flick becomes his highest grosser in US
Ajith Kumar‘s ‘Thunivu’ is currently in 14th place on the list of highest-grossing Tamil movies at the US box office.
Released on Pongal festival in January, ‘Thunivu’ opened to a good start at the US box office. On the first day, the movie raked in $426,723 from 355 locations, breaking the previous first-day record of $208,444 set by ‘Vivegam’.
Although the movie had opened to mixed responses at first, it slowly picked up momentum to pull audiences to theatres in the US and subsequently went on to collect $971,254 in its first weekend.
However, the movie witnessed a massive drop on the weekdays. Even though the film performed relatively well on its second weekend, it was not enough. Predictably, ticket sales for the movie went into complete decline the week after. This drop-off can be attributed to the US market sentiment as unlike Telugu and Hindi movies, Tamil films do not have a big market in the US.
The closing collection of the movie stood at $1,226,271. Interestingly, the Ajith-starrer has managed to perform better than Thalapathy Vijay‘s ‘Varisu’ which was released on the same day.
Varisu made a total gross collection of $1,141,590 at the US box office. Not surprisingly, it too had opened to mixed responses in the US market. However, the movie had done better than ‘Thunivu’ in most US centres except in North America where Ajith’s movie performed exceptionally well.
