THE Assam Rifles apprehended two NSCN-IM cadres and an NSCN-K cadre in separate incidents in Kohima.
A defence release today said based specific information about the presence of armed cadres in Bada Basti area, the 19 Assam Rifles conducted a search operation in the wee hours of November 22 and apprehended two armed cadres of NSCN-IM along with one AK 56 rifle, one 9 MM pistol and live ammunition. The apprehended cadres have been identified as Rect Arian, son of Ngathing, of Ukhrul district and ‘ss’ Cpl Besii, son of Salow, of Senapati district of Manipur. In another incident, the 19 Assam Rifles and Nagaland police, based on a specific information regarding movement of armed cadres of NSCN-K in a vehicle in Kohima town with an aim to carry out a IFC/IFK, the 19 AR and Nagaland Police launched search operations and established various check points in the town on November 21.
At around 2.30 pm, the joint team spotted a white Maruti Zen (NL 05 2183) near PHQ. When the vehicle was signalled to stop, it sped away towards Paramedical Colony.
On being chased, the cadre driving the vehicle ran towards the jungle but was apprehended by the Assam Rifles after a chase.
The apprehended cadre was identified as ‘ss’ Sgt Maj Verochiji, Naga Army No. 15572, son of Nukhuzo of Lozaphuhu village under Phek district. The cadre along with the vehicle was handed over to police later.
The defence release said presence of armed cadres in the heart of the town with automatic weapons proves the ulterior motive of the factions and their turning a blind eye to the requests and aspirations of Naga people’s yearning for peace.
