DIMAPUR — A three-member team from Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) led by the Speaker, Sharingain Longkumer, deputy Speaker, S Toiho Yeptho and NLA secretary in-charge, Khruohituonuo Rio, are attending the 67th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) in Sydney, Australia, which began on November 3.
The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) was founded in 1911 and is one of the oldest established organisations in the Commonwealth. It is also one of the only inter-parliamentary organisations to represent Parliaments at the national, state, provincial and territorial level.
An update from NLA Secretariat stated that there are over 180 national and sub-national legislature branches of the CPA. The legislatures stretch across 53 of the 56 different Commonwealth countries and numerous territories.
It stated that a wide range of workshops would take place during the conference on the theme 'Engage, empower, sustain: Charting the course for resilient democracy.’ It added that the CPC workshops are an opportunity for parliamentarians and global experts to discuss major parliamentary issues.
It informed that eight learning and development workshops would be held during the main conference with an additional world café session on 'Solving contemporary challenges in the Commonwealth.’
There would also be four workshops as part of the 40th CPA small branches conference and four workshops at the 8th Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) conference.
The report stated that NLA Speaker has been nominated to speak in one of the workshops during the conference.
The 67th CPC would culminate on November 8, which would be followed with post conference tour beginning from November 9. It further informed the the delegates from Nagaland would tour three different countries in the following week.
