Three jackals find new home in Singphan wildlife sanctuary

DIMAPUR — In a major boost to wildlife conservation as well as rising awareness among the community about the importance of wildlife in state of Nagaland, a total of three jackals including one male and two females were rescued from Chen area and handed over to Mon division of Forest department by Panglem Bohlim, a native of Chenwetnyu village.

An update from the Forest department stated that in order to ensure their survival, they were kept under observation in Mon town and later released in Singphan Wildlife Sanctuary (WLS) on August 7. The update informed that it is the only wildlife sanctuary of Mon district created for wildlife conservation, which was recently declared as elephant reserve.

The department officials of Mon division and Singphan WLS have conveyed their sincere thanks to the citizen of Chenwetnyu village for rescuing those wildlife and donating to department.

It mentioned that certain kind of wild animals have legal protection under Wildlife Protection Act 1972, which was also extended to Nagaland through a resolution passed in 1981 by the state government.

“Due to unique kind of land ownership in this state, the involvement of community becomes very important in implementing this act. It is worthy to note that all the churches in state held an special prayer on the first Sunday of October 2023 for spreading awareness of wildlife conservation coinciding with the Wildlife Week (2-8th October) celebrated across India,” it stated.

Report further stated that churches of Mon district also joined with other districts by holding special prayer on that day.
