Zhaleo Rio addresses the participants during the inaugural ceremony of the open volleyball tournament on Thursday.

Dimapur, Nov. 5 (EMN): Apart from hard work and discipline, unity is always mandatory in sports and that there shouldn’t be room for isms or personal differences. It is only through unity that a team can shoulder responsibilities together and compete for the best, said Zhaleo Rio, advisor to Sericulture, Excise and Minority Affairs.
The advisor was speaking at the open volleyball tournament, organised by the Kuki Baptist Youth Endeavour, Sirhima’s on Thursday.
While extending his best wishes to the teams from different districts, Rio opined that the tournament should also be a time to know each other and develop affinity.
He acknowledged that Kukis are gifted in sports and music, therefore, urged them to strive for excellence, till they can “represent our people at highest level in their respective disciplines.”
Sharing his thoughts on organising events, Rio expressed that it is high time “we lend ears to the advice of special guests instead of waiting to hear about gift hampers from them” and practice austerity measures on felicitations, presentations, and feasts during such programmes but rather save and utilise resources for the welfare of sportspersons.
The advisor lauded the arrangements and all the 40 participating team. however, lamented the lack of following standard operating procedure, hence, requested village authorities to take all precautionary measures during such mega event.
“At a time when people are all aware of the prevailing condition due to Covid-19 but negligent in following the guidelines, let us be responsible sportspersons, spectators, leaders, and villagers and show that we can observe necessary protocols even during this tournament,” he advised and added that safety measures especially for children and elderly, should be compulsory.
