Dimapur, May 4 (EMN): About 12 families in Dimapur proper reportedly have vacated their homes while about 35 families are said to have been affected by flooding from clogged drains.
According to a press release from the area’s local authorities, Eros Colony Council (ECC), the clogged main drain that “drains out Hong Kong Market, MP Road Deluxe point, Elora Line & Blue Hill station under Eros Colony” has affected these areas flooding residences and shops “leading to unhealthy living conditions.”
‘The situation has compelled 12 families to vacate residence and around 35 families have been affected at present. Many more will be affected during the coming monsoon. The problem of drains had been raised with the authorities in concern in past years but remedial measures could not be taken up owing to financial constraints,’ the updates from the local authorities stated. The situation has become serious that the Colony Council had to take up initiative to clear the blockage, it stated.
‘Though the council is doing its best with the help of some affected members, yet the major obstacle is to dig up the highway and put hume pipes over the old culvert which has failed to serve its purpose,’ the press release explained.
It was informed that work has been underway for the third week “thereby causing lots of inconvenience to public and traffic for which the council request for kind cooperation.”
The council has appealed to residents and shops not to dump garbage and waste materials into the drains.
The Eros Colony Council has expressed gratitude to the deputy commissioner of Dimapur district for contributing Rs.50, 000 for the ongoing works and also ‘assuring to take up the matter at higher levels’; administrative officer of the Dimapur Municipal Council for JCB and DMC labours; executive engineer of Highways “who along with his SDO has verified the effected spot and granting permission to cut the road and also assuring to give required Hume pipes”; staffers of the State Disaster Management Authority “for doing spot verification for needful consideration.” The press release was appended by chairman of the ECC Badu Angami, secretary Dietho Rhakho and GB Victo Yeptho.
The council listed the names of 23 persons who were affected but were still in residence; and about a dozen who were stated to have vacated their houses.
