Dimapur, Sep. 29 (EMN): The Tenyimi Union Dimapur (TUD) on Wednesday requested the Dimapur-based civil societies and organisations to reconsider its call for a total ‘shutter down’ of commercial activities on Thursday for the sake of the public who have been affected by the ongoing pandemic.

The Dimapur District Citizens’ Forum (DDCF) has spearheaded the call for a total ‘shutter down’ of commercial activities in Dimapur on September 30, from 6 am to 6 pm, to show resentment over the government’s recent order for ‘shifting of branches/cells to new Deputy Commissioner’s Office Complex, Chümoukedima’.

While upholding and supporting the right to protest as an inalienable democratic right, the TUD is constrained to question the wisdom of the recent call made by some organisations for a total shutdown of all business establishments in Dimapur, read the press release from the union.

It asked if the organisations had forgotten the devastating effects of the recent consecutive Covid-19 lockdowns on the economy and the public.

“Dimapur and its denizens are struggling to rebuild their lives following these recent traumatic and unprecedented events. As such, to impose yet another compulsory ‘lockdown’ of the entire town appears to be nothing but a display of insensitivity at its highest and a slap on the face of the public,” it stated.

It opined that the public, who are already suffering, should be affected as the grievances of “these organisations” are on the government, and therefore implored to reconsider their proposed actions for the sake of the people.
