Team Gilgal dominates DEF Mokokchung in MDFA Trophy opener

MOKOKCHUNG — Team Gilgal defeated DEF Mokokchung 6-1 in the opening match of the Mokokchung District Football Association (MDFA) Trophy on Tuesday.

The match, played at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex, was marked by a stellar display from Sentisang, who scored four goals, securing the first haul of the tournament.

Sentisang opened the scoring 16 minutes into the game. He swiftly followed with goals in the 21st, 25th, and 33rd minutes, completing his haul and putting Gilgal comfortably ahead.

DEF Mokokchung found a breakthrough in the 44th minute, narrowing the deficit to 4-1 before halftime.

In the second half, Gilgal continued to assert their dominance, with Litinzung scoring in the 79th minute and Pange Konyak adding another goal in injury time (90+1), sealing their 6-1 victory and earning three points in the tournament.

The match was inaugurated by T John Longkumer, State Election Commissioner, who attended the opening ceremony as the inaugural guest.

In his address, Longkumer emphasised the importance of competitiveness, discipline, and fair play in the sport. He urged the players to strive for victory while fostering social harmony and goodwill among the community.

Highlighting global trends in ensuring fairness, Longkumer called for the elimination of foul play, trickery, and social abuses in football. He also praised the often-overlooked role of referees and linesmen, acknowledging their crucial contribution to the success of the tournament.

Remembering Dr. T Ao on the occasion, Longkumer expressed hope that his story would continue to inspire the youth in the district.
