Kohima, Aug. 23 (EMN): The Director of School Education, Wonthongo Tsopoe on Friday reminded teachers that they have a responsibility towards the society, extending beyond classrooms.

“Let us not forget that our responsibility is more than giving textbook knowledge to the children,” he said while speaking during the Kohima District Teachers’ Award ceremony at the conference hall of the District Education Office in Kohima.

Eight government teachers along with four private school teachers were felicitated during the ceremony. Presenting the awards to the twelve teachers, Tsopoe advised them to be ‘ambassadors.’

“Be an agent of change to society, and in education (sector),” he appealed to the teachers.

He urged them not to be complacent with what they get today, but rather strive and work harder and be an example to others.

Asserting that teaching is not an ‘ordinary profession’, Tsopoe said that teachers are responsible for determining the future of the society through the lessons they teach today. “Let’s us not forget that we are accountable to the society,” he reminded the teachers.

Tsopoe stated that teachers are the “motivators of the classroom”, and asked them to be humble, compassionate and honest, to accept constructive criticism, to be contented, work with dedication and devotion, zeal and passion, and to be icons and agents of change.

He also called upon the teachers ‘to teach beyond the box of the classroom, class activities or textual knowledge’, in order to contribute towards the welfare of both the students and the community.

Deputy Commissioner of Kohima Gregory Thejawelie, while congratulating the awardess, urged them to perform better in their fields, as there were still more avenues to achieve greater heights and to strive for the awards at the state and the national levels.

He further encouraged them to be the “source of inspiration to all and be role models for other teachers.”
